Version 10.13.6, build 17G66, adds AirPlay 2 multi-room audio to iTunes. It also fixes Photos not recognizing AVCHD media from some cameras and a Mail problem moving Gmail messages between accounts.
Late 2009
Supported Macs reach back to late 2009. A 2010 MacBook Pro or Mac mini works, as does a late 2009 iMac.
Storage
The upgrade asks for 14.3 GB of free space and 2 GB of memory. Clear room before you start.
Quiet improvements
FS Switch
High Sierra sits between Sierra’s familiarity and Mojave’s dark mode ambitions. It keeps the interface you know, without the visual overhaul that came later.
Against Sierra, the difference is the file system. APFS arrives quietly — faster directory sizing, built-in encryption, better space management. You notice it most when duplicating a large file. Instant.
Next to Mojave, High Sierra feels lighter on older Macs. Metal 2 support is here, but without the compositing demands of Mojave’s dynamic desktop. If your Mac predates 2012, High Sierra is the last release that runs without compromise.
For a quick upgrade path, a high sierra dmg torrent can get a clean installer onto a USB stick. Useful when internet recovery stalls.
Fixed Sidebar
You double-click the installer. The Mac reboots. A dark screen with a progress bar — 34 minutes, then 12, then done.
On first login, Photos reindexes. The sidebar is now fixed; you drag an album, it stays. You open a landscape shot, click Edit, choose Curves. The adjustment feels precise, like a real tone curve. You lift the midtones slightly and export.
Mail loads. You search for a receipt. Top Hits surfaces the correct message first. Safari launches. A news site tries to blurt video. Silence. The tab shows a speaker icon, muted by default.
You open Notes, add a table — three columns, two rows — for a packing list. It works.
APFS Encryption
Turn on FileVault while APFS handles the encryption layer. The performance penalty is near zero.
In Safari’s preferences, under Websites, set Auto-Play to “Never Auto-Play” for all sites. The default stops most, but not every edge case.
Spotlight can show flight details. Type an airline and flight number. If it doesn't appear, go to System Preferences > Spotlight and confirm “Spotlight Suggestions” is enabled.
If you grabbed a macOS High Sierra torrent to build a bootable drive, verify the disk image mounts cleanly before writing it to USB. A corrupted block wastes an hour.
Safari blocks autoplay audio. Notes adds simple tables. Photos gains Curves and Selective Color.
