Requires macOS 14 Sonoma, 16 GB of RAM, and 8 GB of disk space. Works on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.
Composite anything
- Animate any layer for title sequences or credit rolls
- Isolate foreground elements from the background
- Remove unwanted objects and stabilize shaky video
- Correct color, blur, sharpen, or distort footage
Frame-by-frame control
Motion designers, video editors, and animators who build compositions frame by frame. It handles simple tasks like a clean lower third, and scales to intricate visual effects work. The timeline and layer system give you precise control when a cut isn’t enough and the shot needs to be rebuilt.
Other apps
After Effects sends a composition to Premiere Pro as a linked clip. No render. No export. Changes in one show up in the other.
Illustrator layers arrive intact. A logo built in Illustrator can be separated into individual shapes, then animated on their own timelines inside After Effects. Photoshop files keep their layer structure too. Masks, blend modes, and transparencies survive the trip.
For 3D work, the Cineware plug-in pulls Cinema 4D scenes directly into a comp. You rotate a model in C4D and watch the update in After Effects. The free Cinema 4D Lite installs alongside the app.
Audition handles the audio. Right-click a clip, choose Edit in Audition, clean the track, and save. The cleaned file replaces the original on the timeline.
macOS features are quiet but useful. Quick Look previews a rendered MOV without opening a player. Spotlight finds project files by layer name if you’ve saved with comments. And the native color picker in the system palettes matches your display profile, so what you pick in the UI looks the same in a rendered frame.
Max RAM previews
Open After Effects > Settings > Memory & Performance. Lower the RAM reserved for other applications to 3 or 4 GB. This gives After Effects more room for RAM previews, which is where you spend most of your time.
Under Media & Disk Cache, move the disk cache to a fast external SSD. The cache fills up quickly—especially with the new Object Matte disk caching in version 26.5—and keeping it off the boot drive prevents slowdowns when macOS needs to swap memory. Set the maximum cache size to at least 100 GB if you have the space.
Switch on Auto-save under Preferences. The default interval is 20 minutes. Reduce it to 10. Multiple project versions pile up in the auto-save folder and one of them will save you.
Turn on Show Rulers and Show Guides from the View menu. The new guide system in 26.5 supports percentage-based positioning. Grab a guide from the ruler, right-click, and choose Edit Position. Typing 50% centers it. Custom guide colors are in Preferences > Guides & Grid.
A workflow: keying a green-screen shot
Import the footage. Drop it into a new composition that matches the clip’s resolution and frame rate. Name the comp Key_01.
Apply Keylight (Effect > Keying > Keylight 1.2). Sample the green backdrop with the screen color eyedropper. Switch the view to Combined Matte. The goal is a solid white figure on a solid black background with clean edges.
Adjust Clip Black and Clip White until the matte is tight but no detail is lost. Raise Screen Shrink/Grow by one or two pixels to pull the edge in slightly. Then soften it with Screen Softness. Keep the value low—1.0 to 2.0 is usually enough.
Pre-compose the keyed layer. Name it Keyed_Clean and choose Move all attributes into the new composition.
Add a background plate below the pre-comp. Now the edges will look wrong against the new backdrop. Apply an Advanced Spill Suppressor to the pre-comp to pull the remaining green tint. Set the method to Ultra.
Finally, drop a Light Wrap effect (from the Key Correct set) on the pre-comp. Sample the background plate, set the intensity to around 0.3, and the edges blend into the scene. The keying is done.
Finetune velocity
Hold Shift while scrubbing a property value to move in increments of ten. Hold Command for finer control, down to one-tenth of the default step.
Double-click a keyframe on the timeline to open the Keyframe Velocity dialog. Adjust the incoming and outgoing influence as percentages. This is how you get smooth easing without opening the graph editor.
Press U with a layer selected to reveal only the properties with keyframes. Press UU to see every property that has been changed from its default. In a comp with dozens of layers, this is how you find the animation you need to fix.
The Align panel has a hidden trick. Select two layers, hold Command, and click an alignment button. The second layer aligns to the first one rather than both moving to a common center.
Many motion designers get started with an After Effects Mac torrent to explore the toolset before committing to a full production pipeline. The same goes for artists evaluating Adobe torrent Mac packages that bundle multiple apps, or those looking for an Adobe After Effects Mac crack to test the latest object matte caching on an older machine. VFX students often pair the app with a BCC plugin After Effects free download to add particle and glow effects without switching applications. When a project calls for it, After Effects cracked Mac setups let freelance compositors work on the same timeline as an editor running Premiere, sending comps back and forth without a render step between them.
