If Garry's Mod taught you anything, it's that a good physics sandbox replaces a dozen other games. Besiege takes that idea and narrows the focus to one thing: medieval siege engines you build from scratch.

The campaign hands you a castle. You bring the contraption. Your machine might roll on wheels, crawl on legs, or flap its wings until something catches fire. Cannonballs and archers will test your design. You can also skirmish those same levels with friends in multiplayer, or face off in dedicated arenas.

A level editor ships with the game. Steam Workshop support adds battle machines, custom levels, textures and mods. The Multiverse mode lets you team up for shared destruction.

Tinker bursts

  • People who enjoy tinkering more than following instructions
  • Short bursts of creative destruction
  • Playing with friends who appreciate absurd engineering

Patience required

  • Success depends on your patience with physics trial and error
  • No guided tutorial; you learn by watching your machines collapse

Bracing wobble

Machines that wobble themselves apart usually need bracing. A few well-placed wooden blocks between joints calm the physics enough to keep your creation upright.

Steam Workshop content won't appear if the game folder sits in a path with non-ASCII characters. Moving Besiege to the root of your Applications folder often solves it.

Performance drops on large machines come from too many collision calculations. Simplifying complex limb chains and reducing the number of simultaneously triggered parts brings framerates back.

Multiplayer desyncs happen when host and client run different mod sets. Match your mod lists before connecting. A clean restart after disabling mods helps too.

Expansion parity

Does the Mac version support the same expansions as Windows? Yes. The Broken Beyond expansion arrived with version 1.91, and it runs on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.

Can I use my Windows Steam Workshop subscriptions here? Only if you move the game files yourself. A Besiege Mac torrent that bundles workshop items won't sync automatically; you'll need to copy subscribed content into the Mac install manually.

Will a controller work? The game recognizes most standard gamepads, but the building interface feels built for a mouse. Most people use the keyboard for block placement and save the controller for piloting finished machines.

The download runs without an activation step. Install it, pick Applications as the destination, and you're in.

Questions

Can I play the campaign with friends?

Yes, the campaign can be skirmished in multiplayer, and there are also dedicated arena maps for battling friends.
