You place a miner on iron ore, feed it coal with a wooden inserter, and watch the first iron plates slide onto a belt.
Mining — Hand-harvesting ore and stone gives way to electric drills within the first hour.
Belts and inserters — Moving items from A to B without you. The moment you automate a belt line, the game shifts.
Research — Feeding science packs into labs unlocks everything from steel furnaces to logistics robots.
Oil processing — Pipes, refineries, and chemical plants. This is where many factories get messy.
Logistics network — Flying robots that move items between chests, freeing you from belts entirely.
Enemies — Pollution draws them. Turrets, walls, and later laser defences keep the factory running through the night.
Adjacent games
Mindustry shares the conveyor-and-drill DNA but layers in tower defence as the main event. It runs lighter, fits a phone screen, and wraps up a map in under an hour. Factorio stretches across days. One is a skirmish; the other is a civilisation you build from ore.
Satisfactory takes the same loop into three dimensions. Pretty, first-person, and slower to scale because placing a splitter takes thirty seconds of walking and aiming. Factorio stays flat, fast, and legible from a zoomed-out map view. You spend your time thinking, not commuting between machines.
Dyson Sphere Program sends the factory across solar systems. The interplanetary logistics are magnificent. But its early game drags, and you fight the camera as often as the bottlenecks. Factorio keeps the camera fixed and the friction low: right-click to open, left-click to place, no orbiting required. If you want the purest automation puzzle, it still lives here.
Last few updates
Version 2.0.77 landed in May 2026 and cleaned up several sharp edges. Cargo pods no longer clip through the rocket silo. Inserters and silos themselves stopped deadlocking in edge cases that could freeze a late-game factory. Two crash paths got patched — one when an entity died without a recorded source, another when a loader carried a stack size override it shouldn't.
On the modding side, new Lua prototype reads appeared. Scripts can now inspect quality-related values and fluid visualization colours, which gives mod authors finer control without workarounds. These changes don't alter your factory layout, but they keep a heavily modded save running cleanly into the thousand-hour mark.
Blocked entry lane
A player managing a city-block megabase opens the map view. One iron ore outpost shows an idle train with a blinking "no path" alert. A signal placed two hours earlier blocks the entry lane because a chain signal never got paired. The dispatcher rides out in a builder spidertron, drops the missing signal, and watches six trains resume their cycle. The copper wire shortage that was quietly stalling blue circuit production resolves itself three minutes later. She closes the map, sips cold coffee, and opens the factorio download mac page for a friend who just switched from a Windows laptop. The factory never stopped.
