If you spent time with Age of Empires, Northgard will feel like a colder, quieter cousin. It strips away the breakneck pace and replaces it with seasons that shape every decision.

Seasons Bite
A small settlement grows across an open map. Winter brings blizzards and frozen food supplies. You deal with undead draugar, a fire-breathing dragon, and the weight of a stolen relic. It is strategy played at the pace of a long winter.
First adjustments
Open the options before your first game. Two changes matter early.
Set auto-save frequency to every three months. Winter starvation can erase an hour of progress otherwise. Turn off edge scrolling if you play on a trackpad — the map drifts at the worst moments.
Lower the UI scale slightly. The default interface can crowd a 13-inch screen during a blizzard fight with three warchiefs on the field.
A clean early game
Pick the Stag clan for your first full run. Their starting bonus to food silos gives you room to learn the rhythm.
Scout one tile in each direction immediately. You are looking for a forest with deer and a stone circle. Build a woodcutter's lodge on the forest tile first, then a house. Assign one villager to wood, two to food. Do not build a training camp yet — the first summer is for stockpiling.
When the first winter warning appears, pause construction. Move every available body to food production. A starving scout cannot map the ruins you need for the Horn of Konung questline. By spring, you should have enough stockpile to place a healer's hut and begin clearing wolf dens.
