korg collection mac — main panel

One suite. The sound and behavior of classic KORG synthesizers.

This update adds TRINITY, PS-3300, SGX-2 and Filter Ark. SGX-2 is a concert grand piano, and it widens the suite more than you might expect.

Who benefits

Keyboard players who grew up with M1 or Triton hardware. The muscle memory transfers. Patch names match. What you learned on a workstation two decades ago still works here, inside a DAW.

Sound designers who value constraints. KORG synths have a recognizable architecture — not infinite, but deep. That limitation encourages decisions rather than option paralysis.

Composers working to picture. The SGX-2 grand fits a cue without dominating it. You reach for a piano sound and get something that sits in the track without EQ gymnastics.

Anyone rebuilding a rig after moving to Apple silicon. Some older KORG software instruments never made the jump. This collection runs natively, which matters for session stability.

SGX-2 arrival

SGX-2 arrived. That single addition shifted the collection from a synth suite into something broader. Before, you needed a separate piano library. Now you open one plugin.

TRINITY brought the early workstation sound. Not pristine — textured, grainy when you push it. PS-3300 added semi-modular behavior with an unusual signal path. Filter Ark gave you filter models to run other audio through.

Everyday use changed in one small way: you stop switching tools as often. The palette grew enough that you stay inside the collection for longer stretches.

Velocity curves

Treating every preset as finished. KORG patches are often starting points. The raw sound is close, but velocity curves, effects sends and filter cutoff want adjustment for your playing style.

Ignoring the soft pedal on SGX-2. It is not just a volume reduction. The timbre shifts, and the note decay lengthens. If a piano part feels stiff, try riding the soft pedal.

Loading the full collection into a session at once. You can, but each instance uses memory. One TRINITY, one SGX-2, one MS-20 — that is already a dense arrangement. Build around what you need, not what is available.

Overlooking Filter Ark as an insert. It is easy to see it as a standalone curiosity, but running a drum bus through the MS-20 filter model changes the groove more than a compressor sometimes can.

No progress bar

Native Apple silicon support keeps loading times short. SGX-2 samples stream from disk without a noticeable wait on modern SSDs. On an M1 machine, opening the plugin and playing feels immediate — no progress bar, no sample-loading pause.

CPU use is per-instance. PS-3300 can spike with many voices and long releases, but voice management is sensible. Dropouts are rare in normal use. At buffer 128, a few instances run without clicks.

Memory footprint varies. SGX-2 reserves what it needs for the piano samples. The synthesizers are lighter. A session with SGX-2 plus three other KORG instruments stays under 2 GB on Apple silicon, which leaves room for other plugins.

Stability in Logic Pro and Ableton Live has been uneventful. No crashes on session load, no AU validation failures after updating macOS. That kind of predictability is what lets you trust the tools and focus on the music.

Apple silicon and 64-bit Intel, macOS 10.13 or later.
