You know the rhythm from other Total War titles. The campaign map click, the unit card drag. Here, it's tuned for survival.

  1. Pick a culture. The map now reaches Mesopotamia. Each position feels fragile.
  2. Study the new Sea Travel Lanes. They change how armies move. A coastal raid can come from anywhere.
  3. Raise new units. The roster additions give you tools, but the Bronze Age collapse erodes everything you build.
  4. Fight to hold, not just to expand. Dynasties asks you to endure a world that is falling apart.

Minute to minute, you are managing decay. A general dies. A trade route fails. A city rebels. The add-on layers these frictions over the familiar loop of building and battle. It feels less like conquest and more like salvage.

Starving stacks

Playing this like a standard Total War campaign leads to ruin. Expansion is not your friend.

New players often recruit too many armies too early. Every unit costs food. Bronze Age economies collapse faster than Rome's. A full stack can starve a province in three turns.

Another error: ignoring the court. The Dynasty System rewards patience. Intrigue actions are cheap, and a well-placed whisper can cripple a rival without a battle. Skipping court politics means fighting wars on every front.

Overlooking Sea Travel Lanes is also common. A beginner fortifies land borders and leaves the coast naked. An Aegean fleet lands behind your lines and takes a settlement before your army can turn around.

defending the coast as Mycenae

You start with a stretched coastline and too few units.

First, disband your chariots. They are expensive and weak in settlement defense. Use the upkeep to recruit two units of spearmen. Place one in the port settlement, one on the road inland.

Next, open the court screen. Find the faction closest to your sea border and select the Sow Dissent action against their general. It costs little and delays their invasion by several turns.

Then send your lone agent onto a Sea Travel Lane. Use them as a scout, not a fighter. Spot the enemy fleet early and you have time to reposition. Let them land on your spearmen, not on empty fields.

After the first repelled invasion, do not push out. Repair the port. Replenish the garrison. The Bronze Age rewards those who wait.
