Photographers who miss the tactility of paint.
JixiPix Artista Impresso Pro — six impressionist styles in a layered Mac app.
Alla Prima — wet, loaded brushwork.
En Plein Air — the light touch of outdoor sketches.
Tache — broken color, small strokes.
Layers let you stack styles. A soft background wash beneath a crisp Alla Prima foreground, for instance.
Slider restraint
Throwing every slider to maximum. The app rewards restraint.
A common error is ignoring the layer order. A heavy Tache layer placed above a delicate En Plein Air layer will bury it entirely. Try reversing the stack. Let the lighter style breathe on top.
Another pitfall: using the default stroke size for every image. A portrait needs finer brushes than a landscape. Zoom in before you commit.
Forgetting transparency. New users often leave each layer at full opacity. Dropping a layer to 40% reveals the textures beneath and avoids a muddy result. Blending modes multiply the possibilities without adding complexity.
Relying on presets alone. Presets offer a starting point, not a finished piece. A single brush-size adjustment after applying a preset often makes the difference between a filter effect and something that holds the eye.
Morning street build
You open a photograph taken in soft morning light — a street scene with long shadows. The image lands in Artista Impresso Pro. You choose En Plein Air as your foundation. Stroke size comes down slightly. The preview updates. The cars and lamp posts soften into suggestions.
You add a second layer. Alla Prima. You push the brush load higher, then drop the layer opacity to 55%. The foreground figures gain weight without losing the airy base beneath them.
Edges need attention. You enable Painted Edges and dial the strength back until the canvas edge feels organic, not like a cutout. The image now occupies its own space, a painted rectangle rather than a filtered photograph.
You save a layered version for later adjustment, then export a flat TIFF. Total time: under ten minutes. The result reads as a painting, not a photo with a treatment applied.
Runs solo or as a plugin for Photoshop, Lightroom, and Elements. Batch processing handles whole folders.
