Players who enjoy managing resource chains and shaping a landscape will find their place here. It removes the safety of a flat map and asks you to build upward.

Adapt

Wet seasons bring growth; droughts test your reserves. Dams and levees become survival tools, not decoration.

Stack

Lodges, platforms, and bridges let a dense colony work on many levels. Space is the first limit you learn to ignore.

Shape

A custom-map editor ships with the game. The community shares worlds that push the water physics further.

A millwright's morning

A Folktails player on a dry map wakes to a low-water alert. The morning is a checklist: check the upstream dam, rotate two pumps to the deeper channel, queue a new levee before the heat rises. Sixty beavers depend on this rhythm. One missed step and the carrot fields brown by noon.

The game rewards the kind of mind that keeps a small notebook by the keyboard. Not a gamer's notebook—an engineer's.

Early errors

New players overbuild housing. Thirty lodges and no pump. Population outstrips water in the first drought and the colony collapses before cycle three.

Another common slip: treating dams as walls. A dam holds water only to its top edge. Spillover during a wet season erodes the land behind it. Levees belong on the flanks; floodgates need a path to drain. Learn this early or rebuild your riverbank twice.

Beginners also ignore verticality. A single platform over a warehouse doubles storage without clearing another plot. Stacking feels optional until you run a 200-beaver district on a hillside.

Native silicon

The build runs native on ARM and x86. On an M4 Mac mini it loads districts of 300 beavers without stutter. The water simulation—surface flow, evaporation, contamination—stays fluid even at speed three. No fans spin up during a routine dry season.

Memory sits around 1.2 GB for a mid-game map. Large custom worlds with complex hydrology push closer to 2 GB. Stability over a four-hour session is unremarkable, which is the highest compliment a simulation game can receive.

Autosaves arrive without a hitch. No stalls, no corrupted district data. This is a colony sim that respects the player's time.

Timberborn is Mechanistry’s debut.

Questions

Does Timberborn run natively on Apple Silicon?

Yes, the game supports both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.
